I look forward to sharing ideas with you throughout the year, advising on cleaning related matters, telling you the odd story or two, and keeping readers up to date with industry happenings, including the latest on the government position regarding our fight for recognition of our workforces, plans for the future, and apprenticeships updates.

With Christmas now behind us, we are well and truly in the winter months, therefore colder, frosty, and wet days are upon us, as well as the forecasted snow which must be considered and planned for. Hospitality doesn’t stop – in fact some of our guests most enjoy visiting during this season.

Naturally, they and we dig out our winter woollens, warm coats, hats scarves, gloves and boots to protect ourselves from the elements, but hold on a minute… what about protecting our beautiful floor finishes across our many hotels buildings and homes? More than 80 per cent of soil arrives inside our buildings carried in on feet, trollies, and luggage which is subsequently trafficked around the building. This is particularly problematic during the winter months when we experience snow, ice, water, salt, and grit. Walking from the car park, the bus stop or the train station contributes to the collection of soil on our footwear and baggage.

Once inside a building, damage may occur as the safety preventive measures of grit and salt used to provide slip resistance are made of abrasive matter. This is a soil type which will scratch polished floors, impact negatively on semi-hard surfaces and abrade carpet fibres. It should also be noted that as salt water evaporates it leaves a white residue which will contribute to surface deterioration, reducing the floor life span and ultimately increasing costs as replacement becomes a requirement. It is vital we have a plan to prevent this type of damage to the floors in our buildings. The hotels have invested in stunning floor finishes, and you have cared for them, helping to create that welcoming image as guests as enter the reception.

I have provided a few simple tips to assist you in keeping your floors in good condition during winter months: •

Ensure staff have hard floor cleaning training •

Develop a winter cleaning plan.

  • Increase the frequency of cleaning entrance areas
  • Invest in good quality barrier matting at all entrance areas
  • Increase the amount of matting during the winter months
  • Place scraping matting outside an entrance area known as primary matting
  • Place absorbent matting just inside to soak up moisture
  • Ensure matting is long enough to enable a few strides before walking off to the bare floor
  • Reseal floors in high traffic areas to prevent moisture absorption
  • Dry vacuum clean matting to extract salt grit.
  • Wet vacuum to remove moisture
  • Lift mats and clean underneath
  • Regularly remove salt accumulations during the day
  • Audit these areas more frequently

It is a fact that thorough and robust floor cleaning maintenance is vital in the winter months, maybe less so in Summer as the damaging aspects are less. Seek advice from professional companies to ensure you have the critical care factors and maintenance plans in place to ensure your floors are positively reflecting as a showcase of your business.
