Some 100 staff will lose their jobs following closure of the Birch Selsdon, formerly known as the Selsdon Park Hotel near Croydon, which only reopened earlier this year after an extensive makeover. Administrators were appointed but have not yet found buyers for the business.
Just this time a year ago the new look ‘shabby chic’ hotel and private members’ club was holding a recruitment drive. Also closed is Birch’s first property, the Birch Cheshunt hotel on the Theobalds Park Estate in Hertfordshire.
Performance Hotels, a management company of entrepreneur Chris King and former Ace Hotel London MD Chris Penn, launched the business in a joint venture with real estate investment firm Aprirose, before leaving Birch Cheshunt last year.
The Birch Selsdon has 181 bedrooms and included two restaurants overseen by chef Lee Westcott. Birch Cheshunt featured restaurants overseen by Robin Gill.
A statement on the Birch Selsdon hotel’s website announced that Moorfields Advisory has been appointed as adinistrators and continued: “We regret to inform you that the Joint Administrators have taken the difficult decision to close the hotel with immediate effect.
“We appreciate this is disappointing news and apologise for the obvious distress and disruption to our members, guests, suppliers and the employees.”
