Cornwall landmark changes hands
The Atlantic Hotel, which has been under the same family ownership since 1986, has been acquired by the Cornwall Hotel Collection.
Former owner Lorraine Stones says: “After many successful years of trading, our family are so pleased to be able to pass on our iconic hotel to the Cornwall Hotel Collection in the knowledge its legacy will be safe in their hands. We wish them all the very best for the future.”
The clifftop hotel has 57 en suite guest bedrooms and suites, two apartments, an owner’s apartment, and extensive dining, events, entertainment and spa facilities, including two pools.
It was established back in 1892 and early visitors included Queen Victoria. But perhaps the ones who created the greatest stir were The Beatles, who stayed there for three nights in 1967 while filming Magical Mystery Tour. Thousands turned up when news broke and some holidaymakers and local residents appeared in the eventual movie.
In recent years the hotel’s been owned by the Cobley family, who oversaw significant refurbishment and expansion.
New owners Cornwall Hotel Collection already have three hotels in the region – The Greenbank, The Alverton, and The Falmouth. MD Ben Young, says: “This landmark property perfectly complements the Cornwall Hotel Collection, strengthening our commitment to exceptional Cornish hospitality, heritage, and guest experience across our portfolio spanning Cornwall. We’d like to thank the previous owners for their stewardship over the past 40 years, and we look forward to preserving and maintaining their legacy.”
Stephen Champion, director at Christie & Co, who oversaw the sale, reveals: “The hotel generated significant buyer interest when it launched to the market, attracting competitive bidding from multiple parties.”
