Campaign for safe journeys home
Hospitality workers in Glasgow are winning support for their Get Me Home Safely campaign calling on for employers to provide transport if shifts end after 11pm.
The dangers faced by staff working in hotels, clubs and restaurants has been highlighted with the backing of the Unite hospitality group. Now Glasgow councillors of all political persuasions have supported a motion proposed by a Green party member calling for action to improve safety for late-night workers.
The council heard of staff having frightening experiences during walks to their home, and one of the campaign organisers left her job after being assaulted on her way home from a hotel shift in the city. One issue is that for some a taxi ride can eat up two hours’ wages or more. The first aim is to achieve buy-in from employers, workers and politicians.
